The History and Lore of Aquamarine

The word Aquamarine comes from two Latin words “aqua” and “mare” which respectively implies water and sea. The first traces of the use of the aquamarine gemstone were found to be amongst the Greeks, and that dated back to around 480 to 300 BC. Its popularity can be ascertained since the 17th century. The term ‘aquamarine’ was apparently found mentioned in a significant work ‘Gemmarum et Lapidum Historiia’ by Anselmus de Boodt which was published in 1609.
The aquamarine gemstone is associated with many myths and legends. This gemstone was considered the sailor’s gem by the Greeks and the Romans. It was supposedly used to ensure a safe and successful passage through the stormy seas. During the medieval period, the stone was known to rekindle the love of a married couple and was also believed to make soldiers invincible.
In fact, according to a certain saga, the gemstone originated in the treasure chest of mermaids and hence, was considered a lucky stone for sailors. According to the Romans, a shape of a frog when carved out on an aquamarine gemstone was known to reunite enemies and renew their friendship. As per another Roman legend, the stone is considered to bring lovers together. The stone is also considered the most appropriate gift for a bride, following the consummation of their marriage.
Aquamarine was greatly revered by the Sumerians, Hebrews and the Egyptians. For them it symbolised happiness and everlasting youth. The people of the Christian era, identified the aquamarine with the Apostle, St. Thomas since it “imitated the sea and the air”. Writers of the middle ages believed that aquamarine when cut as a crystal ball could be used as a stone for fortune telling. There were many methods found mentioned in ancient literature about using the stone as a divining tool. According to many folklore, aquamarine brought victory in battles and even in legal disputes. It was also used as part of ceremonies conducted to bring rain when needed.
The 19th century saw the popularity of the sea green varieties of the gemstone, though today, deeper the blue the more valuable it is considered. Gradually, its popularity soared and jewelleries like necklace, pendant, earrings, ring, bracelets mounted with aquamarine became rampant.

How are the Aquamarine Formed?

As mentioned, aquamarine belongs to the beryl group of minerals. The formation of aquamarine is largely dependent on two major components; beryl and iron. Comprised of beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate, beryl may come in different colours like white, green, red or blue depending on the impurities present. However, in its purest form it is known to be clear. The presence of iron in beryl, changes its colour to turquoise or blue colour which is known as aquamarine.
Beryls and hence, aquamarine are primarily found in deposits which are known as granitic pegmatites. These are huge structures which are composed of interlocking rocks and minerals and have a high concentration of granite deposits. They can also be found in vugs, or what is also known as pockets or encased by quartz and feldspar. The aquamarine gems are normally found along with Tourmalines.
